The Autumnal Equinox Health Preservation Method of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms
At 9:30:34 p.m. on August 7, Liqiu—the Beginning of Autumn—arrives. Liqiu marks the start of the cool season. However, during the height of the "Sanfu" period, the weather remains extremely hot, so it’s still essential to take measures against heat and stay cool. Nevertheless, Liqiu is ultimately a sign that autumn has begun. After Liqiu, yang energy in nature gradually begins to decline, while yin energy starts to grow. This also represents a transitional period in the human body, where the balance between yin and yang shifts from yang declining to yin rising. Therefore, in autumn health preservation, all aspects—diet, daily routines, mental state, emotions, exercise, and physical activity—should follow the principle of nourishing and conserving. 1. Daily Routine and Health Maintenance In autumn, one should “go to bed early and rise early, just like the rooster.” Going to bed early helps align with the contraction of yang energy, while rising early allows the lung qi to expand fully and prevents excessive contraction. Liqiu falls at the beginning of autumn, when the summer heat hasn’t completely dissipated yet. Although cool breezes occasionally arrive, the weather remains highly changeable—even within the same region, you might experience “four seasons in a single day, and different weather every ten li.” Thus, one shouldn’t wear too many layers of clothing; otherwise, it could impair the body’s ability to adapt to the cooling climate and make one more susceptible to catching a cold. “Spring drowsiness, autumn fatigue, and summer dozing”—after Liqiu, it’s not just drowsiness but also a general feeling of exhaustion and lack of energy. Everyone should avoid autumn fatigue by ensuring sufficient sleep and engaging in moderate physical exercise, gradually increasing intensity as the body adapts. 2. Mental Health Maintenance In autumn, people experience both the joy of harvest and, inevitably, feelings stirred by the changing scenery, evoking a sense of loss: “The sunset is infinitely beautiful, yet it draws near to dusk.” Therefore, when maintaining mental health, one must cultivate inner tranquility, keep the mind calm and peaceful, and maintain a cheerful mood. Avoid feelings of sadness, grief, or melancholy. Even if encountering sad events, actively seek ways to release those emotions and ward off the chilling atmosphere. At the same time, one should gather and conserve one’s vital energy to adapt to autumn’s serene and balanced energy. 3. Dietary Health Maintenance According to the “Suwen: On the Timing of the Zang-Qi,” “The lungs govern autumn... When the lungs contract, eat sour foods promptly to help them contract; use sour flavors to tonify them and pungent flavors to disperse them.” Sour flavors help contract the lung qi, while pungent flavors disperse and drain it. In autumn, it’s best to focus on gathering rather than dispersing, so one should minimize consumption of pungent foods such as scallions and ginger and instead consume more sour fruits and vegetables. Autumn is characterized by dryness, which easily damages body fluids. Therefore, diet should focus on nourishing yin and moistening the lungs. One can appropriately consume soft and moistening foods such as sesame seeds, glutinous rice, japonica rice, honey, loquats, pineapples, and dairy products to benefit the stomach, nourish the lungs, and generate body fluids. Pay attention to supplementing vitamins and trace elements, and eat more light and mild foods. 4. Exercise and Physical Activity Autumn is an excellent time for exercise and physical training. Everyone can choose activities according to their own situation, such as Tai Chi, yoga, swimming, stretching exercises, brisk walking, jogging, stair climbing, roller skating, jump rope, shuttlecock kicking, and badminton.
